This science fiction gem is an H.G. Wells adaptation from director NATHAN JURAN with a screenplay by NIGEL KNEALE. Most importantly is the involvement of RAY HARRYHAUSEN and his use of DYNAMATION stop-motion. When scientists in the year 1964 are confused by evidence of a long-ago space flight, their investigation leads them to the now heavily aged Arnold Bedford (EDWARD JUDD), who explains all. Back in 1899, Bedford, eccentric scientist Joseph Cavor (LIONEL JEFFRIES) and heroine Kate Callender (MARTHA HYER) took a trip to the moon in a home-made space vehicle. Once on the lunar surface, they encountered an alien civilization resembling an ant colony, complete with "queen," soldiers and workers. PETER FINCH appears briefly as a messenger; he happened to be visiting the set when the another actor failed to show up. This Z-Grade gem is a lot of fun with neat old school stop-motion animation effects.
